Literacy
This week we started drawing club! The Acorns were excited to take part and intrigued what it would include. We started with some ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ words which we practised throughout the week (whoosh, splat, fiery and scaly). We added actions for these interesting words and used them in sentences. We then shared the story of ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. On the first day of drawing club, we focused on the character of the dragon. We drew our own dragons, focusing on the different features a dragon might have and then we wrote a sentence to describe it. We learnt about full stops this week and used them at the end of our sentences. We proudly displayed them in our class and impressed everyone with our fantastic drawings- even Mrs Lamb spotted them!
UTW- Chinese New Year
We spent Wednesday morning with Oak class learning about Chinese New Year. We learnt the traditions of this special event and how it is celebrated. We watched a video of a lion and dragon dance in the parade and learnt some of our own dragon dancing moves. We tasted some Chinese food including noodles, sweet and sour sauce, spring rolls and prawn crackers. We made lanterns just like in the parade and also our own dragons. We took part in the chopstick challenge and had a go at writing some Chinese symbols. We finished our morning with the story of the animals which the Acorns enjoyed acting out the next day with masks!
Maths
We have been learning about different combinations of making the number 5. We played a beanbag and hoop game to see which combinations we could find. It got rather competitive and we had to record our scores to see who got the most bean bags in! We then learnt how to use a part-whole model to show different ways to split 5. We did it with people first and then we had a go with cubes.
