Horse Chestnut 15th – 19th November

Next week’s learning:

English – We are looking at a new topic, Performance Poetry inspired by Julia Donaldson.
Maths – This week, we are looking at dividing by 10 and 100.
Science – We are continuing with our States of Matter topic, looking at Evaporation.

In English, we have been planning our own narratives retelling Escape from Pompeii. The children have written some wonderful ideas using lots of imagination and techniques!

In Maths this week, we recapped our 10 times tables and used it to help us multiply by 10 and 100. We looked at what the place value actually meant and how we moved one place to the left when multiplying by 10 and two spaces to the left when multiplying by 100. The children made place value cards to help them with their learning.

In Science, we looked at the process of heating and cooling and how it can change a materials state. We all took part in an investigation of what temperature would melt chocolate the fastest. We measured the temperature with thermometers and we had three bowls. One was 45 degrees, 30 degrees and 28 degrees. We placed three squares of chocolate on metal tins on top of the water. We left these for a while as the children made their predictions. We found out that the best temperature to melt chocolate was 45 degrees. The children saw the chocolate turn from a solid into a liquid. After a while, the chocolate began to harden and turn back into a solid.

This week, our Geography lesson had a list historical twist. We were looking at how places change over time and we looked specifically at photographs of All Saints’ and the Swann Inn from 90 years ago! It was very interesting to see the history of our local area and how it has changed since the past.

In Computing this week, we looked at how to create a PowerPoint about our favourite film or TV show. The children used skills such as creating transitions, changing font and colours. The children had lots of fun with this and created wonderful slide shows.

Children in Need:

As it was Children in Need on Friday, the children came to school in non-uniform in return for a donation of £1 for Children in Need. The children did Pudsey themed activities throughout the day. They also took part in a live work out with Joe Wicks!
