Horse Chestnut 9th- 13th September

Next week’s learning:

Maths – continuing place value, looking at 1, 10, 100 and 1000 more.

English – focusing on sentence structure

English:

This week, we explored enhancing our sentences with fronted adverbials. We focused on single word adverbials to begin with. We looked at how we could further out learning by using adverbials to give more details about how, when and where something is done.

Maths:

This week, we explored partitioning numbers up to 10,000! We began by looking at number to 1,000 using part whole models and number sentences. Once we felt secure in this, we used the same methods to partition numbers up to 10,000.

PE:

This week, we developed our dribbling technique in hockey. We then looked at passing the ball to each other. Finally, we explored trying to score goals and defend using our hockey sticks.

RE:

We began our new topic on Christianity this week. We explored the idea of a saviour and what it means to be rescued. We looked at how Jesus’ name means saviour and how he sacrificed himself for others. We then looked at Grace Darling and how she risked her life to save others. We then drew pictures of this.

History:

This week, we explored the Roman army! We learnt the reasons why they were so powerful. They employed strong men with a ‘never give up’ attitude. They had lots of protective armour. They used a tortoise shell formation to protect themselves from the enemy. We made our own shields and tried to recreate the formation! We learnt some new words too: auxiliaries- soldiers from other tribes who fought for the Romans. Legionaries – soldiers from Rome who fought for the Roman army.
