Phonics– Our focus sounds next week will be ai, ee, igh and oa. The common exception words we will be learning is ‘was’ and ‘you’.

Topic/UTW– Our theme this week will be continuing our theme of celebrations by learning about birthdays. We will be talking about how and why we celebrate these every year and sharing our own experiences of this celebration.

This week we have been learning....

UTW- Diwali

This week we have been learning about the celebration of Diwali. We loved learning all about the traditions of Diwali and listened to the story of Rama and Sita. We watched a video of a little girl preparing for Diwali with her family and were intrigued looking at pictures of Hindi temples and beautiful rangoli patterns. We made our own diya lamps using salt dough which helped us practise our dough disco moves by moulding the dough into bowl shapes. We designed mehndi patterns and then challenged Mrs M to paint them onto our hands. We learnt a Diwali dance and even used materials to make our own Hindu saris.

Maths

This week, we have been learning on 2D shapes. We have been learning how a 2D shape is flat and talking about the properties that a 2D shape may have. We focused on circles and triangles and compared how a triangle has 3 straight sides and a circle has 1 curved side. We went on a shape hunt to see if we could find circles and triangles around our school environment. We also made shape pictures using circles and triangles talking about sizes and orientations.

Literacy- The Gingerbread Man

We had discovered some flour, a baking tray and a rolling pin in our classroom. It had a letter from the Gingerbread Man who challenged us to follow the clues to find him! Luckily the clues were all linked to rhyming which we were experts in from last week’s literacy focus. Phew! We worked as a team to work out the clues and ran around the classroom finding each one. They led us to find the Gingerbread man and storybook. We were so excited!! We have been enjoying lots of Gingerbread Man themed activities this week and look forward to more next week!
