Next week, we are learning.....
Literacy– Next week, we will be practising our blending skills and reading CVC words using the phonemes we have learnt in Phonics. We will also be reading the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and focusing on the characters in the story.
Maths– Next week, we will be comparing size, capacity and mass using a range of mathematical resources.
Phonics– Next week, we will continuing Phase 2 of our Phonics scheme ‘Unlocking Letters and Sounds’. Our focus sounds this week will be g, o, c, and k. We will also be introducing our first common exception word ‘the’.
Topic/UTW– Our theme this week will focus on our homes. We will be talking about different types of houses and homes and discussing our own homes. We will be designing a home for the three little pigs and testing out materials that will be strong enough to not be blown over by the big bad wolf!
This week, we have been learning....
Maths- Sorting
This week, we have been learning how to sort a set objects into different attributes. We sorted a selection of autumnal objects and talked about all the different ways we can sort the objects. We sorted them into rough or smooth, big or small and brown or green. We challenged the Acorns to sort a basket of objects- some chose to sort by colour and some chose to sort by type. We encouraged the Acorns to talk through their sorting decisions.
Literacy- Initial Sounds
We have been learning about initial sounds in our literacy work this week. We learnt that initial sounds are the beginning sounds of a word. We spotted them in words written on the board and listened carefully to Mrs M’s words to see what sound we heard first! We played a game called ‘Silly Soup’ where we had to pick a phoneme, find objects that begin with that phoneme and put them in the bowl. We then had to mix it up, singing the ‘Silly Soup’ song and then taste it to see if it made the right phoneme sound. It was an incredibly popular activities that continued into busy time.
UTW- Our Bodies
This week, we have been learning about our bodies. We looked at a skeleton and talked about how this is what our body looks like under our skin. We talked about the different bones and parts of our bodies and what we use them for. We drew around one of the Acorns and then each Acorn was given a word card to match to the correct part on the body outline. We helped each other and impressed Mrs M with our use of positional language too!
