Acorn Class 3rd-7th June 2024

Next week, we are learning...

Literacy– Next week, we will be reading the story ‘Are the Dinosaurs Dead Dad’ by Julie Middleton. We will take part in Drawing Club to draw and write about characters and adventures from the story using our super writer toolkit.

Maths– Next week, we will be focusing on sharing and grouping. We will learn how to share a group of objects fairly and count quantities by groups.

Phonics– Next week, we will begin Phase 4 Mastery of our Unlocking Letters and Sounds programme. We will be looking at adjacent consonants at the beginning of words and revisiting common exception words ‘like’, ‘do’ and ‘so’.

Topic/UTW– Our theme this week will continue to be dinosaurs but with a focus on fossils. We will be learning about Mary Anning and studying fossils and skeletons to match to different dinosaurs.

This week, we have been learning.....

UTW- Dinosaurs

Our theme this week has been dinosaurs and we have been enjoying lots of different dinosaur themed activities. We worked in teams to sort dinosaurs by type and then we enjoyed some sensory play with our dinosaur small world set up. On Wednesday, we received a rather exciting delivery. It was a letter from the museum asking us to help them with one of their dinosaur samples. We were very surprised to discover it was dinosaur poo!!!!!! We worked as a team to sort the dinosaurs into herbivores, carnivores and omnivores and then excavated the ‘samples’ to see what was inside. We then worked out which ones belonged to which dinosaur. The museum was incredibly grateful for our help.

UTW- Science Afternoon

On Thursday afternoon, one of the Acorn mums came in to teach us about science. We were so excited! We talked about what it means to be a scientist and what exciting things we can learn. First, we watched two experiments. One was called ‘Elephants Toothpaste’ (but we renamed it Dinosaurs Toothpaste) and were amazed by the reaction! We then watched another experiment of how a egg can get into the conical flask. We were then set the challenge to find out which liquid in our 3 test tubes was acid. We loved seeing the different colour reactions. We then used our pipettes to transfer the acid into 3 different dishes to find out which one fizzed. This helped the decision for the final experiment….watching a volcano erupt! What a afternoon ! We are such lucky Acorns!!
