Acorn Class 9th-13th October 2023

Next week, we are learning.......

Literacy- This week, we will be focusing on the story of ‘The Leaf Thief’ by Alice Hemming and Nicola Slater. We will be focusing on vocabulary from the story and using this as our first drawing club text. We will also be writing initial sounds as part of our work on this book.

Maths- This week we will be exploring different representations of 1,2 and 3. We will be using our subitising skills to recognise representations of these numbers and then creating our own different representations of these numbers.

Phonics– This week, we will be continuing Phase 2 of our Unlocking Letters and Sounds Phonics Programme. We will be learning the phonemes l,ll and ss and practising our oral blending and learning how to write the grapheme to match these phonemes. We will also be learning how to blend to read and segment to spell. Our common exception word we will be learning this week is ‘go’.

Topic– Our overarching topic this term is ‘Who Am I?’. This week our focus will be Autumn. We will be learning about the changes that happen during this season and going on our own Autumn walk to spot signs.

This week, we have been learning......

UTW- The 5 Senses

This week we have been learning about the 5 senses. We learnt about the different parts of our bodies help us use our senses. We passed around some items round the circle to explore and linked each one to a different sense. We used our sight to look in a mirror, our hands to touch a smooth ribbon, our hearing to hear a musical instrument, our nose to smell some herbs and our tongue to taste a slice of lemon. The lemon faces pulled were amazing- we found it very funny!!

Our new class pets- The Snails

We have kindly been given some new class pets for Acorn class. They are Giant African Land Snails. We have been incredibly excited about them and have spent the last few weeks learning how to care for them. We have seen lots of curiosity about them and can’t wait to learn more and more about them. We decided to give them some names so we brainstormed some ideas and came up with 3 options. We then each voted on which name we preferred. We learnt about tallying, comparing and counting too! The winning names are……Flower and Sully! Welcome to Acorn class Flower and Sully, we are very happy to have you!

Maths- Repeating Patterns

This week has been all about patterns. We learnt that a repeating pattern is a pattern that keeps going and going. We first made patterns using colours and tried to spot the mistake in patterns by correcting them. We had to continue patterns that Mrs Marsden had set up and keep it going. Finally we created our own patterns using Autumn items and came up with patterns using body movement.

Family Fridays

We love reading in Acorn class and on Friday we were really really excited because our families were invited to come and read with us in class. We loved picking some of our favourite storie to share with our special people.
